Cradock
is a town situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, in the upper
valley of the Great Fish River, northeast of Port Elizabeth. Cradock
is one of the chief centers of the wool industry of the Cape, and
also produces beef, mutton, dairy, fruit, lucerne, and mohair. Due
to its hot sulphur springs, the town enjoys a reputation as one of
the best health resorts in the province. It stands at an altitude of
885 metres. Four Kilometres North of the town are sulphur baths of
the Cradock Spa which were used for the treatment of rheumatism. In
the neighboring district a few herds of mountain zebras, now
protected by the game laws. The town was founded on the 27 August
1818 when a Dutch Reformed Church was built and is named after Sir
John Cradock, governor of the Cape from 1811 to 1813.
Cradock has a healthy climate, with hot summers, bracing cold
winters and a low rainfall. The limited rainfall provides the
magnificent view of the night sky and the glorious sun rises and
sunsets one associates with a desert.
Tourism prospers in Cradock as a result of its historical past (the
Great Trek started in Cradock and surrounding districts), whilst the
geographical position makes Cradock an ideal stop-over for the
traveler en-route to the major centres.
Cradock is a significant town through which the Fish River runs. The area between Port Elizabeth and the Fish River is known as the Sunshine Coast. The Great Fish River runs past Cradock and through the South African province of the Eastern Cape in an area called the Little Karoo. The river is 644 km long and flows into the Indian Ocean. The Great Fish River generally runs all year round, although its headwaters rise in an arid region, and the flow could well be sluggish beyond the ebb and flow of the tidal reaches; Water from the Orange River system is also used to keep up its flow in dry periods. The river is tidal for approximately 20 km.
The Fish River Canoe Marathon takes place annually over two days. This two day canoeing marathon over 81.1 kilometres starts at Grassridge Dam and ends at the Sport Complex in Cradock.
